  4.     Tums, meet Tagamet. The race to create global pharmaceutical
  5. companies inspired a transatlantic merger last week. London's
  6. Beecham Group, maker of Tums antacid, and Philadelphia's
  7. SmithKline Beckman, developer of the anti-ulcer drug Tagamet,
  8. said they will form a company with more than $6.7 billion in
  9. total sales. The merged corporation, to be renamed SmithKline
  10. Beecham, will rank No. 2 in the pharmaceutical world to New
  11. Jersey-based Merck.

  13.     The move comes none too soon for SmithKline, which has
  14. suffered from declining Tagamet sales as the once revolutionary
  15. drug faces increased competition. Industry experts see the two
  16. companies as a good match. Beecham, which also makes Brylcreem,
  17. has built strong European markets, while SmithKline prevails in
  18. North America and Japan.
